The sweet and spicy aromas of cinnamon, caramelized sugar, and bubbling porridge greeted Sabrina when she awoke. Already Deakon and Reynger were crouched by the camp fire with full bowls in hand, their heads together, talking as the monk updated his friend with an abbreviated version of their journey. There was no sign of the tension between them from the night before as Deakon mentioned their ill reception at Graytown, the Order’s wall, the polluted waterways, and the sabotaged bridges. He shared his suspicions that the Order was behind it all, but never mentioned who Sabrina really was, or what her purpose was on this trip.

She eagerly accepted a warm bowl from Charly, and joined the boys. Micah offered her a smile, but she ignored him. She didn’t like the hot and cold game he was playing. She kept her face lowered, concentrating on shoveling down spoonfuls of the sweetened porridge before it got cold, but more than once her gaze snaked over the bowl’s rim to see what Micah was doing.

Reynger enjoyed his breakfast so much, he licked the bowl. “Ah, little brother, you have rare talent. There’s not much that would tempt me out of the forest, but the smell of your cooking would do it every time.”

Charly beamed.

“So what brings you to the edge of the Great Forest? We normally cross paths right in the heart of the woods. I’ve never known you to travel so far south before,” asked Deakon.

“So true, brother, but I fear the Great Forest is in peril. I’ve been chasing down strange happenings and my investigations have led me here.”

Charly’s eyes goggled and he sprayed the mouthful of porridge he had been eating as he jumped into their conversation. “What did you find?”

Deakon’s stare quelled any more outbursts, but everyone leaned in to hear Reynger’s words. With a serious expression on his usually smiling face, he replied, “It’s easier if I show you.”
